Call for Stories: Why Is This Work Important to You?

The U.S. Breastfeeding Committee is seeking stories about your passion for breastfeeding, human milk, and the policies and practices that protect, promote, and support them. Stories are the fuel that keep us working for real change that families need, and stories help us educate lawmakers about policies that can make a difference. Personal stories allow us to keep a pulse on the needs of today's families, and they serve as a powerful tool to inspire action across all sectors. The easy tool invites you, your network, and the families you serve to tell us about your passion for breastfeeding, be it personally, professionally, or politically (meaning, how can policies help?)! We know that breastfeeding and human milk feeding mean unique things to everyone. We are interested in learning about what fuels you!

National News

CHAMPS Launches New Resources for Hospitals to Support Breastfeeding Employees

Communities and Hospitals Advancing Maternity Practices (CHAMPS) released two new toolkit resources to aid hospitals in implementing employee workplace lactation support. The free, downloadable resources are available as part of the Mississippi WINS Employer Toolkit on CHEER's website. The new resources for hospitals include an implementation booklet that provides updated information on federal legislation related to employee lactation support called the "Hospital Employee Lactation Support: A Model for the Workplace," along with practical steps for implementing lactation support accommodations in the hospital setting. The toolkit also now features a sample policy, "Sample Hospital Employee Lactation Policy," which includes sample language that aligns with current federal law and is based on best practices from Mississippi hospitals with employee lactation support accommodations.

WIC Breastfeeding Award of Excellence Applications Open

The U.S. Department of Agriculture 2024 WIC Breastfeeding Award of Excellence applications are open until December 15. Local Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) agencies that have operated a breastfeeding peer counseling program for at least one year are eligible to apply. The award program recognizes exemplary local WIC breastfeeding programs providing models to motivate other agencies to strengthen their breastfeeding promotion and support activities, with the goal to ultimately increase breastfeeding initiation and duration rates among WIC participants.

Fact Sheet: Paid Family and Medical Leave is Good for Business

The National Partnership for Women and Families published the "Paid Family and Medical Leave Is Good for Business" fact sheet. The resource pulls together key facts that point to how businesses actually benefit from paid leave policies.

CAP Series on Ensuring Paid Leave for the Self-Employed

The Center for American Progress (CAP) completed a series of stories on paid leave and the self-employed titled, "Ensuring Paid Leave for the Self-Employed." The series includes articles explaining why self-employed workers need paid leave, how self-employed workers have access to state paid leave programs, and more.
