An Organization of Organizations

About Us

The United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) is an independent nonprofit organization that was formed in 1998 (incorporated in the state of Florida in 2000) in response to the Innocenti Declaration of 1990, of which the United States Agency for International Development was a co-sponsor. Among other recommendations, the Innocenti Declaration calls on every nation to establish a multisectoral national breastfeeding committee comprised of representatives from relevant government departments, non-governmental organizations, and health professional associations to coordinate national breastfeeding initiatives. What began as a conversation with 19 people has grown into a powerful coalition of more than 100 organizations that work collaboratively to drive efforts for policy and practices that create a landscape of breastfeeding support across the United States.

Our Mission:
To drive collaborative efforts for policy and practices that create a landscape of breastfeeding support across the United States.

Our Vision:
Thriving families and communities

Our Values:
  • Leadership: The USBC depends upon the development, engagement, and inspiration of collaborative leaders who serve on behalf of our common cause. They may draw upon the wisdom of organizations, but serve as individuals.
  • Integrity: The USBC champions honesty, transparency, and accountability as integral to the success of our collaborative efforts.
  • Inclusion: The USBC places a premium on meaningful opportunities for all voices to be heard. A commitment to diversity and equity infuses our work and decision-making.
