May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

During Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, join us in celebrating the achievements and contributions of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. We celebrate the countless contributions of Asian/Pacific Islanders (API) throughout America’s history while also growing our appreciation of the spectrum of identities across the Asian/Pacific American communities. Asian/Pacific Americans make up more than 7% of the U.S. population. Join us in honoring the rich culture of Asians and Pacific Islanders and raising awareness of health disparities.

    • "Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Resource Mapping Survey"
    • The Asian Pacific Islander Breastfeeding Taskforce, in partnership with BreastfeedLA and the Asian, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander Breastfeeding Task Force is conducting a nationwide landscape analysis of lactation resources available to Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities. As part of the project, they have launched the AANHPI Resource Mapping Survey. This survey of professionals who identify as AANHPI and/or work with predominantly AANHPI communities aims to determine what lactation resources are available. People who provide support for birthing and lactating AANHPI families are invited to complete the survey.

Building Relationships: A Key to the Rise of our Indigenous Breastfeeding Communities - Amber Kapuamakamaeokalani Wong Granite, Breastfeeding Hawai'i Coalition
  • O ke kahua ma mua ma hope ke kūkulu: First the foundation, then the structure can be built.
This Hawaiian proverb teaches us the importance of building relationships in order to ensure the rise of our people. Whether we seek to influence fellow learners, patients, or customers, we must get to know them before we can ask them to make change. Once we seek and understand where they come from, what is truly important to them, and then help them unpack their stories, the real work can truly begin. During this session, attendees heard an oli, Nā ʻAumakua. This oli acknowledges our ancestors, our land, and our nation. It invites strength, knowledge, and power into our space. We then learned more about native Hawaiian practices, challenges, and successes of the recent Indigenous Breastfeeding Counselor training held in Waimānalo, Hawaii in October, 2019.

The Breastfeeding Toolkit: Utilizing a Rapid Innovative Process to Expand Lactation Resources in Rural Hawai'i -  Jennifer Elia, Krista Olson, Amber Granite, and Alexandra (Sasha) Williams, Hawaii Statewide Breastfeeding Workgroup
  • "Yes, You Can: A Breastfeeding Toolkit" puts concrete tools and guidance for breastfeeding support into the hands of families served by Federally Qualified Health Centers in rural Hawai'i. Developed by rural breastfeeding champions using a rapid innovation process, the Toolkit offers busy pediatric providers concrete resources for families experiencing breastfeeding challenges in the early weeks. This session will introduce participants to the innovative "Smallify Lab" process used to engage stakeholders to build a prototype toolkit to disrupt common causes of early breastfeeding cessation in low-resource communities. We will have hands-on opportunities to explore our "Toolkit" and a brief experience using rapid innovation tools to generate solutions to other consistent access to care challenges.
