Staying Abreast: Weekly Wire - Upcoming Sessions at NBCC Next Week, & More

5/29/2026

Weekly Wire: May 29, 2026

The Staying Abreast: Weekly Wire e-Newsletter is a compendium of news, actions, and resources considered to be of interest or relevance to the breastfeeding field. The newsletter aims to support the USBC mission "To drive collaborative efforts for policy and practices that create a landscape of breastfeeding support across the United States." Included items are submitted for consideration or identified by the USBC e-news team via extensive online review. Whenever possible, the newsletter utilizes language directly from the primary source of an item without additional analysis or edits. In some cases, the USBC offers additional perspectives through the "USBC Insights," media and partner highlights, and the "News & Views" section. Inclusion of an item in the e-newsletter does not imply endorsement or support by the USBC of an item or organization, unless specifically noted.

USBC Updates

Upcoming Next Week! Spotlighting NBCC Sessions

Nourishing Generations: Indigenous-Led Breastfeeding Policy and Practice

This session offers insight into Indigenous-led policy advocacy, strategies for engaging Tribal leadership and employers, and best practices for building culturally grounded, community-driven lactation support initiatives. As the Native Breastfeeding Coalition of Wisconsin approaches ten years of collective work, this session offers both reflection and practical guidance for advancing breastfeeding policy in ways that honor tradition, strengthen systems, and promote long-term community well-being.

A National Strategy to Protect, Promote, and Support Breastfeeding for Mothers and Families in the United States

This session will discuss the main findings, conclusions, and recommendations from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) report: "Breastfeeding in the United States: Strategies to Support Families and Achieve National Goals." The presenters will identify key actions for the breastfeeding and public health communities.

Join us for these sessions and many more at this year's National Breastfeeding Conference and Convening (NBCC). We hope to see you there next week!

Weekly Wire Hiatus

The Weekly Wire will be on hiatus the week of June 1 while USBC staff members are hosting the 2026 National Breastfeeding Conference and Convening in Bethesda, Maryland. We look forward to connecting with you at the conference!

International News

2026 WHO Code Status Report

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) published "Marketing of breast-milk substitutes: national implementation of the International Code, status report 2026." This status report presents a global assessment of the extent to which countries have implemented the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes and subsequent World Health Assembly resolutions through national legal measures. This year’s report shows some progress in implementing the Code into law, but monitoring and enforcement provisions remain inadequate. This report shows that adoption of the Code has a strong association with breastfeeding rates.
