Share Updates from Your Organization for USBC Promotion

The USBC invites you to submit your organization's news, updates, or events for consideration to be included in the Staying Abreast: Weekly Wire newsletter and/or other USBC communications channels. The USBC communications team is continuously looking for breastfeeding news, action opportunities, resources, and policy updates relevant to the breastfeeding field. Please note that for inclusion in the Weekly Wire, events and resources must be free of charge and accessible to all interested individuals. USBC member organizations are invited to submit fee-based events via the USBC Member Portal to be featured in the USBC Events Calendar.

Weekly Wire Hiatus & USBC Office Closure for Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Day

The Weekly Wire will be on hiatus next week and the USBC office will be closed on Thursday, November 28, and Friday, November 29, in observance of Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Day. We look forward to connecting when we return!

At the USBC, we honor the land and Indigenous communities whose traditions and stewardship have shaped the landscapes we now inhabit. We reaffirm our commitment to standing in solidarity with Indigenous peoples in reclaiming birthing, breastfeeding, and human milk feeding traditions intentionally disrupted by colonization and systemic oppression. Access the USBC Native American Heritage Month webpage to connect with Indigenous led and serving coalitions and organizations and access learning opportunities, tools, and resources.

National News

 2024 State Diabetes Profiles

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the 2024 State Diabetes Profiles. The CDC Division of Diabetes Translation (DDT) is a leader in the nation's efforts to help people prevent and manage diabetes. The division works to identify people with prediabetes, prevent type 2 diabetes, prevent diabetes complications, and improve the health of all people with diabetes. The state diabetes profiles show the economic impact and burden of diabetes, key program outcomes, and the DDT direct funding in all 50 states and Washington, DC.

USBC Insight: Breastfeeding has a profound impact on population health and is proven to protect against a range of chronic diseases and contribute to positive maternal and infant health outcomes. Research shows that breastfed children have a reduced risk of type 1 and 2 diabetes and women who breastfeed have a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.

Free Course for Clinicians on Women's Preventive Services Initiative

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists launched the "Women's Preventive Services Initiative: Recommendations for Women's Preventive Health Care" course. The free course introduces the Women's Preventive Services Initiative's (WPSI's) recommendations to clinicians in order to increase the use of the recommendations in routine practice. WPSI recommends comprehensive lactation support services (including consultation; counseling; education by clinicians and peer support services; and breastfeeding equipment and supplies) during the antenatal, perinatal, and postpartum periods to optimize the successful initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding.
