Mission, Vision, and Values

Values Definitions

  • Leadership: The USBC depends upon the development, engagement, and inspiration of collaborative leaders who serve on behalf of our common cause. They may draw upon the wisdom of organizations, but serve as individuals.
  • Integrity: The USBC champions honesty, transparency, and accountability as integral to the success of our collaborative efforts.
  • Inclusion: The USBC places a premium on meaningful opportunities for all voices to be heard. A commitment to diversity and equity infuses our work and decision-making.
goal one

Goal One: Be the national collective voice for breastfeeding

The power of what’s included:

  • The USBC's role as the national coalition bringing voices together to build a "landscape of breastfeeding support"
  • All five sections of The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding
    • Mothers & Families (1.1)
    • Communities (1.2)
    • Health Care (1.3)
    • Employment (1.4)
    • Research & Surveillance (1.5)

The potential of what's "missing":

  • Specific priority strategies or implementation activities

Rationale:

  • In a Collective Impact model, the participants select priority strategies and define implementation activities
  • Strategies may need to shift over time due to developments in the external environment
goal two

Goal Two: Ensure organizational vitality

The power of what’s included:

  • Relationships are the key to vitality
  • Best practice guides board & staff
  • Values come to life in the USBC’s leadership
  • Imperative of securing financial resilience to sustain existence of backbone organization
goal three

Goal Three: Engage stakeholders in a Collective Impact model

The power of what’s included:

  • Description of roles of the USBC as "backbone organization" providing infrastructure supports for collaborative work
  • Stakeholder engagement: these activities are not done for the USBC alone, but for the whole field (via Constellations)

The potential of what's "missing":

  • Specific policies/procedures locking partners into predetermined ways of working or interacting

Rationale:

  • Supports building of backbone organization capacity
  • Helps make the case to funders for value of core infrastructure activities

Collective Impact...

  • Puts the participants in charge of WHAT efforts would benefit from collaboration
  • Puts the backbone organization in charge of supporting HOW this collaboration occurs

It’s no accident that this Goal is placed at the bottom…as it is the core foundation on which USBC moves forward.

goal four

Goal Four: Create and model a culture of inclusion, diversity & equity

The power of what’s included:

  • Interweaving of objectives to each other goal
  • Connection of equity to both structural and cultural components of the USBC

The potential of what's "missing":

  • Arrogance that this is already accomplished: first word is "create," acknowledging the journey

Rationale:

  • Equity has to be consciously infused throughout
