National Breastfeeding Month
On August 6, 2011, the USBC officially declared that August is National Breastfeeding Month. Read the Proclamation.
In recognition of National Breastfeeding Month (NBM), each August the USBC hosts a social media advocacy and/or outreach campaign inviting member organizations, breastfeeding coalitions, partner organizations, and individuals to participate in online action and conversation about the policy and practice changes needed to build a "landscape of breastfeeding support."
NBM 2021 Theme: Every Step of the Way
We envision a world in which every family is supported at every step along the infant feeding journey, with warm and coordinated hand-offs and transitions so that the needs of lactating families and those who support them are anticipated and met, every step of the way. Register for the launch event webinar for the "Continuity of Care in Breastfeeding Support: A Blueprint for Communities" on August 24, 1 p.m. ET.
Created by Kerstin Vogdes Diehn of 501c Design, the artwork represents the spheres of influence in a breastfeeding family's world and the continuity of care that every family deserves along the human milk feeding journey. *Request permission to use the Official 2021 National Breastfeeding Month logo for NBM-related activities and promotions, excluding fundraising, by reaching out to firstname.lastname@example.org with the specifics of your request, and a JPG or PDF of sample artwork.

Take Action in Your State or Territory!
Each year the USBC requests a Congressional Proclamation to declare August as National Breastfeeding Month in the United States. This year, we are thrilled to pilot a toolkit you can use to urge your governor to proclaim August as "Breastfeeding Month" in your state or territory. The proclamation toolkit includes:
- Spreadsheet with links and information to submit a proclamation request
- Long Sample Proclamation Letter (most similar to what USBC uses)
- Short Sample Proclamation Letter (some states require an abbreviated submission)
Please feel free to adapt the sample letters as needed to fit requirements for your state or territory. If your organization submits a request, let others know by making a note in the Submission Notes column of the spreadsheet to avoid duplication. Please also complete this brief form to provide feedback, including any county or city proclamation request information, to improve this resource in future years.
