Hispanic Heritage Month

Photo Aug 04, 2 32 06 PM.jpgEach year Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. During the month, individuals and organizations celebrate the rich histories, cultural influences and contributions of Hispanics/Latinx in the United States. Latinx are a diverse group with ancestry from 28 countries. Over 50 million Latinx live in the United States, and it is estimated that by 2050, one in three of the U.S. population will be Latinx.

While 80% of Latinx in the United States initiate breastfeeding indicating an intent to breastfeed. Unfortunately, only 16% can meet the national guidelines of six months exclusive breastfeeding (recommended by APP and WHO) suggesting that systematic barriers exist and contribute to breastfeeding rates that fall below the national average and short of the Healthy People 2020 goals.

  • Racial Equity Learning Community
    • USBC has been funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to host this online community as part of an inclusive learning and transformation process for the "First Food" field. The community will build the capacity of the breastfeeding field to apply both an "equity lens" to inform and guide our external strategies and activities, but also an "equity mirror" to examine our internal structures, culture, and policies
