From 2006-2020, the CDC Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity and the USBC co-hosted this series to bring together breastfeeding coalitions to share best practices and news and to network and collaborate on issues of national significance.
Coalitions Building a Grassroots to Treetops Movement: Needs Assessment Findings and Capacity Building Supports
Senior Coalition Relations Manager, U.S. Breastfeeding Committee
The focus of The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding on developing and strengthening state coalitions recognizes that it is at the state and local levels that initiatives will be implemented and adapted most effectively to address specific populations. Strong, well-functioning coalitions serve as powerful vehicles for mobilizing action on policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) approaches to building a landscape of breastfeeding support. During this session, highlights of the USBC’s recent coalitions needs assessment will be shared, and coalition strengths, opportunities, and priorities will be discussed. Attendees will learn how a Matrix of Effective Coalitions has been designed as a self-assessment tool, with an associated resource/reference guide. Plans for a new virtual Coalitions Learning Collaborative will be reviewed, as well as the formula for a new Coalitions Indicator on the CDC Breastfeeding Report Card.
