Continuity of Care in Alabama: Coalition Partnerships Make the Difference

Gayle Whatley, RN, WHNP-BC
Alabama Department of Public Health and Alabama Breastfeeding Committee

A grantee of the Best Fed Beginnings (BFB) Project, Alabama Breastfeeding Committee (ABC) supported three hospitals in the state to improve maternity care practices and work toward "Baby-Friendly" designation. Hear how partnerships between the BFB hospitals, Alabama Breastfeeding Committee, and key stakeholders, combined with alignment of priorities and resources, strengthened community support for breastfeeding. ABC partnered with University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Alabama chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics to plan a statewide educational effort for pediatricians to maximize breastfeeding support in outpatient settings. Development of a webinar module on Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Clinical Protocol #14: Breastfeeding-Friendly Physician's Office: Optimizing Care for Infants and Children offered through the Alabama Public Health Training Network (and available on-demand) has allowed Alabama to scale its support to providers throughout the state. This presentation will address:

  • How to create a strong and diverse partnership to assess and address local continuity of care
  • How local community teams improve a community's breastfeeding support
  • How allied ABC projects are strengthening the continuity of breastfeeding support across Alabama
