Rates of breastfeeding initiation and duration in the U.S. fall short of national health goals, including those in the Healthy People Initiative. Legal and policy solutions can play an important role in creating and sustaining the maternal child health systems and environments that help all families achieve their infant feeding goals. This panel discussion will share information from a new report recently released as part of the Healthy People Law and Health Policy Project - a collaboration between the federal HHS Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), CDC Foundation, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation - that examines how communities can use law and policy interventions at the healthcare, workplace, school, and community-levels to achieve Healthy People’s objectives related to breastfeeding. This session will highlight key findings from the report, including summarizing existing laws and policies that impact breastfeeding families, and sharing specific initiatives from the national to community level that demonstrate emerging trends in breastfeeding support and policy.
