Weekly Wire: November 15, 2019
The Staying Abreast: Weekly Wire e-Newsletter is a compendium of news, actions, and resources considered to be of interest or relevance to the breastfeeding field. The newsletter aims to support the USBC's mission "To drive collaborative efforts for policy and practices that create a landscape of breastfeeding support across the United States." Included items are submitted for consideration or identified by the USBC e-news team via extensive online review. Whenever possible, the newsletter utilizes language directly from the primary source of an item without additional analysis or edits. In some cases, the USBC offers additional perspectives through the "USBC Insights," media and partner highlights, and the "News & Views" section. Inclusion of an item in the e-newsletter does not imply endorsement or support by the USBC of an item or organization, unless specifically noted.

Power Tools Webinar on Relationship Building and Indigenous Breastfeeding Communities
Join the USBC and Breastfeeding Hawai'i on Wednesday, November 20, from 2-3:30 p.m. ET for a webinar titled "Building Relationships: a Key to the Rise of our Indigenous Breastfeeding Communities." This webinar is part of the Power Tools webinar series. During the session, participants will hear an oli, Nā ʻAumakua. This oli (chant) acknowledges our ancestors, our land, and our nation. It invites strength, knowledge, and power into our space. Participants will then learn more about native Hawaiian practices, challenges, and successes of the recent Indigenous Breastfeeding Counselor training held in Waimānalo, Hawaii in October. FAMILY Act Action Opportunities, summarized from NPWF
The National Partnership for Women & Families has launched an online action tool titled, "Tell Chairman Neal: Hold a FAMILY Act hearing ASAP and move forward on paid leave!" Individuals can use the action tool to contact Representative Neal as well as their own Representative to urge them to hold a hearing and markup in the House Ways and Means committee on the Family And Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act. NPWF has also launched an organizational sign on letter calling for a hearing and expressing support for the FAMILY Act.

Webinar on State Paid Family and Medical Leave Legislation, summarized from A Better Balance
A Better Balance is hosting a webinar titled "2019 Paid Family and Medical Leave Legislative Update" on Thursday, November 21, from 3-4 p.m. ET. Participants will learn about emerging trends and highlights from the 2019 legislative session and speakers will discuss lessons learned and other reflections on paid leave wins in Oregon, Connecticut, and New Jersey.
State Fact Sheets on Hunger and Nutrition Programs, summarized from FRAC
The Food Research & Action Center has released a series of state-specific fact sheets titled "Profile of Infants and Toddlers: Hunger, Poverty, Health, and the Federal Nutrition Programs." The fact sheets provide national and state-specific data on hunger and poverty experienced by infants and toddlers. They also include information about access to federal nutrition programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program.
