Partners in Public Health: Improving the Landscape of Breastfeeding Support

The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials is the national nonprofit organization representing public health agencies in the United States, the U.S. Territories, and the District of Columbia, and over 100,000 public health professionals these agencies employ. ASTHO members, the chief health officials of these jurisdictions, formulate and influence sound public health policy and ensure excellence in state-based public health practice. ASTHO's primary function is to track, evaluate, and advise members on the impact and formation of public or private health policy which may affect them and to provide them with guidance and technical assistance on improving the nation's health.

ASTHO Breastfeeding State Learning Community

ASTHO, with support from CDC’s Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity (DNPAO), is using its collaborative Learning Community Model to assist the current State Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) program recipients to increase their capacity to implement evidence-based breastfeeding programs, practices, and services in three priority areas: 1) increase practices supportive of breastfeeding in birthing facilities, 2) provide access to professional and peer support for breastfeeding, and 3) ensure workplace compliance with the federal lactation accommodation law.

Federal funding

State Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) Program: CDC funds 16 state recipients to implement evidence-based strategies at state and local levels to improve nutrition and physical activity.

  • Features a dynamic presentation from CDC about the requirements and application of the federal lactation accommodation law and enforcement, as well as an overview of CDC’s recommended strategies to support breastfeeding in the workplace. New Mexico and Vermont also provide an overview of their project aims and strategies to improve workplace support for this project
