Join the "Action Across America" Campaign
In honor of National Breastfeeding Month, the USBC's "Action Across America" social media advocacy campaign is engaging key Members of Congress to ensure that every mom is empowered and supported to reach her personal breastfeeding goals. Across the country individual advocates, breastfeeding coalitions, and allied organizations are calling on policymakers to support breastfeeding in ways that will create the strategic policy and systems changes needed to overcome the barriers to breastfeeding success. Each week of August the campaign will address a different topic area, aligned with current legislative opportunities. This week's focus is on building support for paid family leave and the Family and Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act: take action now!
The USBC, MomsRising, National Partnership for Women & Families, and National WIC Association hosted the "Action for the Summer Recess" webinar on August 8. Access the recording, slides, and toolkit materials to find everything you'll need to prepare for a visit with your legislator.
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, from CDC
A new Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention entitled "CDC Grand Rounds: Public Health Approaches to Reducing U.S. Infant Mortality" reports on a recent session of Grand Rounds that explored public health approaches to reducing U.S. infant mortality, citing breastfeeding as an important protective action. The infant mortality rate (IMR), the rate at which babies less than one year of age die, has continued to steadily decline in the U.S. over the past several decades. Tragically, despite overall progress, significant racial and geographic disparities in infant mortality persist and preventable infant deaths continue to occur.

Guide to the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Sixth Edition, from NPWF
The National Partnership for Women & Families has published an updated Guide to the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to explain the law, related regulations, and court interpretations. The FMLA guarantees eligible employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave each year to care for a newborn, a newly adopted child, or a seriously ill family member, or to recover from their own serious health conditions, including pregnancy. But the FMLA was always intended to be just a first step. About 40 percent of the workforce is not eligible for leave under the FMLA, and millions of those who are cannot afford to take unpaid leave. Join us in taking action to support paid leave during National Breastfeeding Month!
