Join the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, Assistant Secretary for Preparedness & Response, Technical Resources, Assistance Center, and Information Exchange (TRACIE) on Thursday, September 14, for a webinar entitled, "New Resources to Help Improve Health Care Coalition Preparedness." TRACIE has also developed five new resources to help health care coalitions improve preparedness, decision-making processes, and operational planning.
National Preparedness Month, from DHS
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has released weekly themes and a social media toolkit in preparation for National Preparedness Month in September. This year's theme—Disasters Don't Plan Ahead. You Can.—focuses on the National Preparedness Month goal to increase the overall number of individuals, families, and communities that engage in preparedness actions at home, work, business, school, and places of worship.
New Sling Standards, from CPSC
The U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission has released a recording of the webinar entitled, "Soft Infant and Toddler Carriers & Sling Carriers." The CPSC approved new safety standards for sling carriers that go into effect on January 30, 2018. The standards include the following requirements: loading the sling to ensure sling can carry three times the manufacturer's maximum recommended weight; structural integrity of the sling after all testing has been conducted; occupant retention to prevent child from falling during normal use; inclusion of images showing the proper positioning of the child; warning statements about the risk of suffocation and falls; and a reminder to caregivers to check the accompanying hardware including rings, pieces, buckles, and snaps.
Breastfeeding Empowerment Video, from MomsRising
In celebration of Black Breastfeeding Week, MomsRising has released a new 90-second animated video about empowering breastfeeding women to reach their goals. The video takes stock of what work still needs to be done to ensure that more moms, particularly moms of color, are able to meet their breastfeeding goals.
Invitation for Feedback on WBTi State and Territory Report, from HCP
Healthy Children Project has announced that they are now soliciting feedback on the Draft World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative State and Territory Report. Individuals are asked to review the data presented for their state/territory and report back any errors or missing data by Tuesday, September 5. HCP is also seeking information on other state organizations that should receive this information and how you might use the data.
Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month Blog Series, from HC One
In celebration of Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, HealthConnect One has announced a new blog series entitled, "Reclaiming our traditions on breastfeeding and birth." Latino/Hispanic leaders, advocates, and supporters of breastfeeding and birth are invited to participate in the blog series by sharing a story, poem, picture, video, or art piece in Spanish or English. Baby-Friendly Hospitals Systematic Review Webinar, from ChangeLab Solutions
Join ChangeLab Solutions for a webinar on Thursday, September 7, at 2 p.m. E.T entitled, "Baby-Friendly Hospitals: Laws Across the 50 States." The webinar will present the results of a systematic review of baby-friendly hospital laws in the United States. It will also include an overview of baby-friendly hospital requirements and the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, a brief description of the legal research methods used, and a discussion of what was found. Webinar participants will learn about data that can help advance policy by clearly showing how state laws differ and where gaps exist as well as how to access the findings and quantitative legal data to evaluate these laws' effects on health-promoting behaviors.

The Black Mothers' Breastfeeding Association has launched a 24-hour breastfeeding support hotline for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Breastfeeding questions will be answered by volunteer IBCLCs and CLCs. Contact the hotline at 800-313-6141.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Breastfeeding has shared the "Infant Feeding in Disasters and Emergencies" Fact Sheet, featuring information on safe infant feeding during emergencies including breastfeeding facts and an infant feeding decision-making flowchart.
Media Resources on Infant Feeding in Emergencies, from Various
Safely Fed Canada, Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies, Texas WIC, National Association of Professional and Peer Lactation Supporters of Color, and others have released an early draft of a resource designed to assist mainstream media in sending the right messages around infant feeding during this disaster, including curbing calls for formula donation and the myth that breastmilk "dries up" during an emergency.
News from the Field
Final Report on Preventive Services and Committee Nomination Opportunity, from WPSI
The Women's Preventive Services Initiative has released its Year 1 Final Report entitled, "Recommendations for Preventive Services for Women." The report identifies nine preventive services recommendations for women across the life span, including comprehensive lactation support services during the antenatal, perinatal, and postpartum periods to ensure the successful initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding. The report is the first in a 5-year effort to develop, review, update, and disseminate recommendations for women's preventive health care services. WPSI has also announced that nominations are now open for the Multidisciplinary Steering Committee and the Implementation Steering Committee for the upcoming March 2018-February 2019 cycle. The Multidisciplinary Steering Committee develops clinical recommendations that are submitted to the Health Resources and Services Administration for consideration of support. The Implementation Steering Committee supports the work of the Multidisciplinary Steering Committee by working to develop implementation tools and resources complimentary to the recommendations developed by the Multidisciplinary Steering Committee. In addition, the WPSI implementation performance measures webpage is live and features performance measures that align with the WPSI recommendations.
Improving Maternity Support Through Telehealth Visits, from Georgia
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia has announced the launch of telehealth visits with certified lactation consultants for all eligible State Health Benefit Plan members enrolled in the Future Moms program. Future Moms is available for pregnant women to receive personalized support from nurse coaches during and after their pregnancies. The new telehealth feature now allows moms to have live video visits with lactation consultants.
