Leading Health Indicators Webinar: Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity, from HHS/Healthy People

Join Dr. Howard Koh, Assistant Secretary for Health, for a roundtable discussion on the impact of this critical Leading Health Indicator topic on Thursday, March 21, at 12:00 PM EST. This Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity Webinar, "Who's Leading the Leading Health Indicators?", will highlight the success of one community-wide partnership in reducing childhood obesity through community outreach, advocacy, education, policy development, and environmental change.

New text4baby Video, from HMHB

The National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies coalition released a new video about the text4baby program that can be played on websites, in waiting rooms, or sent to constituents and stakeholders. The video explains how text4baby works and shares testimonials from providers on how they have successfully enrolled moms in the service. Learn more about the value of text4baby and how it helps reinforce the health and safety messages that you're already sharing with patients.

Interactive Web Forum on Sequestration, from PHI

The Public Health Institute is hosting an interactive Web Forum entitled "Cuts! Cuts! Cuts! What the Federal Budget Mess Means for Prevention, Your Community and You" on Wednesday, March 20 at 2:30 pm EST. During the Web Forum, presenters will provide an opportunity to:

  • Discuss the impact of federal funding cuts and hear updates on the latest developments from Capitol Hill;
  • Share and highlight Prevention Fund successes, including Community Transformation Grant (CTG) work from Maryland and their efforts with employers and other key stakeholders; and
  • Discuss outreach tools and messages that individuals and community advocates can use to educate legislators and decision makers.

Health Equity Report, from PolicyLink

A new report entitled Promoting Equity through the Practice of Health Impact Assessment has been released by PolicyLink and three co-author/partner organizations. Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is a tool to help communities assess the impact of proposed policies on community health and equity outcomes. The HIA process not only assesses the likely implications of proposed policies, but it helps identify recommendations for reshaping and enhancing proposed policies in order to maximize health and equity. HIAs should also intentionally support the leadership and participation of community members, particularly historically disadvantaged and vulnerable populations, in decision-making processes that impact their lives.

Article on Breastfeeding and Oral Health

The February 2013 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association featured an article entitled "Oral and General Health Benefits of Breastfeeding." The article calls on the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) to revise its policy statement on early childhood caries to be in accordance with the American Academy of Pediatrics policy statement on human milk which recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. AAPD currently recommends avoiding ad libitum breastfeeding after the eruption of the first primary teeth.
