Emerging Leader Award

At every National Breastfeeding Coalitions Convening since 2014, two exceptional and dedicated individuals who are new or aspiring breastfeeding coalition leaders are honored with the Emerging Leader Awards. This award is a part of the USBC Legacy Award which was established in 2014 to honor the lifelong achievement of Drs. Ruth Lawrence and Audrey Naylor and other leaders with outstanding contributions to the field.

Individuals who are actively involved in their communities, and/or are active members of a state, territorial, tribal, local, or cultural breastfeeding coalition in the United States are encouraged to apply for Emerging Leader awards. Preference will be given to applicants who have never attended a USBC Coalitions Convening, who are working with a coalition serving a state or community (geographic or cultural) with breastfeeding rates that are below the U.S. national rate, and for whom attendance may not be possible without this support.

Tribal Trailblazer Award

Thanks to the generous support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, a limited number of awards are available to support American Indian/Native American and Alaska Native maternal and child health practitioners' participation in the Eighth National Breastfeeding Coalitions Convening. The vision of the Tribal Trailblazer award is to provide support to talented and dedicated individuals who are new, emerging, or aspiring breastfeeding leaders, actively promoting maternal and child health, and breastfeeding support in their Tribes. This honor is for individuals of American Indian/Native American and Alaska Native heritage.

Individuals who are actively involved in collaborative efforts to support breastfeeding in Native communities are encouraged to apply for the Tribal Trailblazer awards. Preference will be given to applicants who have never attended a USBC Coalitions Convening and for whom attendance may not be possible without this support.

Terms & Conditions

While the goal of the USBC is to honor grassroots leaders with the Emerging Leader and Tribal Trailblazer Awards at every National Breastfeeding Coalitions Convening, funding constraints and realities will guide the decision to distribute awards on a year to year basis.

An award may be suspended or terminated at any time, either at the awardee's request, or if in the opinion of the USBC Awards Committee, Conference Program Committee, or Board of Directors:

  • the awardee's performance is unsatisfactory; OR
  • the awardee fails to observe the terms and conditions of the award; OR
  • the awardee fails to attend the conference without notice.

Awardees who are unable to attend the conference due to an emergency will need to notify the USBC Office in writing of this fact, as soon as possible. USBC will work with the awardee to ensure that there is no inadvertent financial burden upon the awardee for flight tickets bought, and hotel reservations made. The awardee will in good faith plan to participate in the events unless an unforeseen emergency arises.
