National Center for Infectious Diseases
Division of Viral Hepatitis
The Division of Viral Hepatitis is the Public Health Service component
that provides the scientific and programmatic foundation for the
prevention, control, and elimination of hepatitis virus infections in the
United States, and assists the international public health community in
these activities.
Breastfeeding-related activities
- Makes recommendations regarding hepatitis B and breastfeeding. A
woman infected with hepatitis B virus does not need to avoid
breastfeeding. She can begin breastfeeding her infant immediately
after birth, with the caveat that her infant receives both hepatitis B
immune globulin (termed H-BIG) and the first dose of hepatitis B
vaccine within 12 hours of birth. The second dose of vaccine should be
given at aged 1 month and the third dose at age 6 months. It is also
important that all mothers take good care of their nipples to avoid
cracking or bleeding.

Immunization Practices Advisory Committee (ACIP). MMWR, 1990,

- Makes recommendations regarding hepatitis C and breastfeeding. A
woman infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) does not need to avoid
breastfeeding. Studies have shown no increase in HCV infection among
infants born to HCV-infected mothers who breastfeed compared to
infants born to HCV-infected mothers who bottle-feed. It is also
important for all mothers to take good care of their nipples to avoid
cracking or bleeding.

virus (HCV) infection and HCV-related chronic disease. MMWR, 1998, 47
(RR-19).

- Conducts research regarding perinatal hepatitis C virus (HCV)
transmission through a CDC study to assess transmission of HCV from
infected mothers to their infants, including potential risk associated
with breastfeeding. This study is being conducted in two areas of the
United States.
- Addresses questions about HCV transmission and breastfeeding in the
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding portion of the Hepatitis C Frequently
Asked Questions located on the hepatitis Web site at http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/hepatitis/c/faq.htm.
