The Division of Health Examination Statistics collects data on the health and nutrition status of the United States via the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. This data is used by policymakers and public health researchers.

Current breastfeeding-related activities

  • Questions related to breastfeeding are asked of women aged 12 years and older as part of their reproductive health history. The questions may be reviewed at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhanes/crhq.pdf

  • Questions related to breastfeeding are asked of the parents of children aged 6 years and younger as part of the diet and health behavior questions asked of young children. The questions may be reviewed at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhanes/spq-db.pdf.

Past NHANES data also included information on breastfeeding and is available for public use. Information on this data is available at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/about/major/nhanes/datalink.htm.
