Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC)
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food and Nutrition
Information Center (FNIC) is a leader in on-line global nutrition
information. Started in 1971, and made permanent by the 1977 Food and
Agriculture Act (Farm Bill), the FNIC is one of several information
centers located at the National Agricultural Library. Its primary mission
is to collect and disseminate information about food, human nutrition, and
food safety.
The FNIC offers the following resources to professionals and the public
worldwide:
- A vast lending library.
- A virtual library with over 1600 links to current and reliable
nutrition information.
- Assistance in locating information.
- Nutrition information via numerous Web sites, resource lists, and
on-line searchable data bases.

To search for breastfeeding-related information on the FNIC Web site,
FNIC suggests
- Searching "Food and Nutrition Topics from A to Z" for the
words breastfeeding, child nutrition and health, or infant
nutrition (particularly newborn and one month pages) at http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/etext/fnic.html.
- Visiting the Consumer's Corner for "Frequently Asked
Questions," and then going to the subject header entitled
"Nutrition Over the Lifecycle." Both the "Infants"
and the "Women's Health" sections have information for the
