The Mothers' Milk Club
of the Rush Children's Hospital is a program of breastfeeding services
based on the latest research evidence that a mothers' milk is uniquely
suited to the multi-faceted needs of her special care newborn infant. A
key to the program's success is the partnership established between a
mother and an institution — mothers partnering with the hospital's Special
Care Nursery in managing their babies' feedings while the baby remains
hospitalized.
The Mothers' Club
Program has four major components:
1) mothers expressing
milk for their babies' feedings,
2) mothers providing
skin-to-skin ("kangaroo") care and suckling at the emptied
breast as tactile stimulation and "practice" for their
newborns,
3) babies feeding at
the breast as soon as they are capable of sucking and swallowing
effectively, and
4) nursery staff
helping mothers prepare for breastfeeding after the baby is discharged
from the Special Care Nursery.
The Mothers' Milk Club
holds luncheon meetings every Friday to support the mothers who are
expressing milk or breastfeeding their Special Care Nursery babies.
Grandmothers, aunties and best friends are invited to attend.
