In 1997, a group of
mothers chatting via E-mail proposed the idea of creating a nonprofit
501(c)(3) organization to promote breastfeeding proactively
to other mothers, primarily via the Internet. ProMoM seeks to improve the societal image of
breastfeeding and to mobilize members to educate others (the public), the
media, the medical community, and prospective or new parents about the
benefits of breastfeeding. Dana Anagnostou, a mom and a corporate lawyer,
founded ProMoM, Inc. with the "goal of increasing the percentage of
women who at least start breastfeeding."
