Physicians'
Breastfeeding Support Kit
A physician's recommendation that a woman breastfeed her baby can play a
strong role in her decision to breastfeed. In order to help physicians
answer many of the questions their patients may ask about Breastfeeding,
Best Start and the DHHS Maternal and Child Health Bureau have developed the
Physicians' Breastfeeding Support Kit. The kit includes an indexed
pocket guide with information on issues ranging from diet and nutrition
during pregnancy, to positioning while nursing, to solving nursing-related
problems like patient engorgement. The kit also includes a breastfeeding
resource guide, a patient letter, a patient education booklet, a 25-page
pad of patient information sheets and a guide for building breastfeeding
support. A companion kit, the Health Care Providers' Breastfeeding Support
Kit, is geared to the specific needs of other members of the health care
team.

In 1997, the United States Department of Agriculture, Food and Consumer
Service, initiated an agreement with Best Start Social Marketing to conduct
a breastfeeding promotion campaign as part of the WIC National
Breastfeeding Promotion Project. Best Start Social Marketing is a
nonprofit 501-3c organization committed to applying social marketing
principles to effective breastfeeding promotion.
The Loving Support
Campaign's goals are to increase breastfeeding initiation and duration
rates, and improve public support for breastfeeding through the
implementing a comprehensive social marketing program. The campaign
uses mass media, direct client education, staff training, and community
outreach in a coordinated effort to provide breastfeeding support to the
WIC community. Based on formative research conducted with consumer groups
and WIC professionals, upbeat and contemporary materials were designed to
emphasize the benefits of breastfeeding, such as bonding, enjoyment, and
health. They address such issues as the need for support from
significant others, especially during the early weeks of breastfeeding;
competing demands for a mother's time; and embarrassment about
breastfeeding.
Best Start has expanded
the Loving Support campaign materials to target other segments of the WIC
population, such as Spanish-speaking communities and Native American
nations. Consultation and tailored campaign implementation is
available from Best Start professionals for communities across America.
