Healthy Children Project — The Center for Breastfeeding
Healthy Children was established in 1993 as a nonprofit research and
educational institution dedicated to improving child health outcomes
through partnerships with public, private and non-profit organizations.
Through its Center for Breastfeeding, Healthy Children partners works with
hospitals, birth centers, health departments, WIC programs, task forces
and other organizations to conduct applied research and to provide
professional lactation education programs to more than 1500 health
professionals, breastfeeding advocates and facilitators each year. In
collaboration with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and Baby-Friendly USA, Healthy
Children is working to implement the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative
throughout the United States.
Educational
Leadership in Breastfeeding
Healthy Children developed a bachelor's degree program in Maternal Child
Health: Lactation Consulting in partnership with the Union Institute &
University (UIU). A masters degree in lactation consulting is also
available in partnership with Vermont College of UIU. Professionals may
also pursue a PhD program with a focus in breastfeeding and human
lactation through The Union Institute Graduate School. Major funding for
developing these programs came from the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services, Maternal Child Health Bureau. Continuing education hours
are also available for nurses and dietitians. The American Council on
Education (ACE) has approved Healthy Children's courses for College Credit
Recommendations, and Healthy Children has a long-term providership
agreement with ANCC and IBLCE.
