The Breastfeeding and Human Lactation Study Center

The Study Center is a program based in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Rochester, New York, dedicated to the retrieving and organizing world literature and scientific information. The core of the Lactation Study Center program is a networked computer system offering health care professionals free information on issues critical to the success of lactation and breastfeeding.

The bibliography data bank, which is constantly updated, provides immediate access to the latest published references on the subject by searching for an article’s primary author, for any author, for a word or part of a word in the title, or by using our keyword code (the keyword categorizes the papers by subject areas).

The drug data bank is updated monthly and includes all the available information about the drug in question including, if known, its oral availability, whether it appears in the milk, the half life in maternal plasma and milk, percent protein bound in plasma, percent of adult dose in milk, the maximum amount in a liter of milk as well as the ratio of the concentration in milk to the concentration in the maternal plasma.

When you call the Lactation Study Center (585-275-0088) with a question, staff search the data bank and retrieve the information you need quickly. Many inquiries can be answered immediately over the telephone. When that is not possible, a reply will be sent by E-mail, return mail, or fax if the need is urgent.
