One of the American College of
Obstetricians and Gynecologists' (ACOG) goals is to help achieve the US
Public Health Service's Healthy People 2010 objective of having 75 percent
of new mothers initiate breastfeeding after delivery and 50 percent
breastfeeding at 6 months. Because the advice and encouragement of
obstetricians and gynecologists are critical in a woman's decision to
breastfeed, ACOG published an educational bulletin:
Breastfeeding: Maternal and Infant Aspects, Number. 258, July 2000.
