Academy
of
Breastfeeding Medicine
The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM) is the international
professional organization that unites physicians to promote, protect, and
support breastfeeding and human lactation. Members come from diverse
medical specialties from more than 25 countries. Priority activities include
educating physicians, promoting research, facilitating optimal
breastfeeding practices, and sharing information among organizations.
Physician education is promoted through annual scientific conferences, a
breastfeeding management course designed for and by physicians, and a
newsletter. Members can rapidly access expert assistance with challenging
clinical cases through an E-mail listserve.
ABM also develops evidence-based protocols regarding common clinical
issues that are related to breastfeeding. The protocols are freely
available to all via the ABM Website at
http://www.bfmed.org.* Protocols are
developed by multidisciplinary teams of physicians who have expertise on
the issue and are based on a rigorous review of the medical literature.
Six protocols are currently available, with Spanish translations in
progress:
#1- Hypoglycemia (English and German)
#2- Going Home/Discharge
#3- Supplementation
#4- Mastitis
#5- Peripartum Breastfeeding Management
#6- Co-Sleeping and Breastfeeding
Example protocols in development include “Neonatal Jaundice,” “Slow
Growth,” “Galactogogues,” “Human Milk Storage for Healthy Full Term
Infants,” and “Lactational Amenorrhea Method of Contraception.”
In keeping with the DHHS Blueprint for Action on Breastfeeding, ABM also
strives to improve societal support for lactation, such as by
participating on the US Breastfeeding Committee and providing expert
commentary about breastfeeding issues in the media or legislature.
