AAP Provisional Section on Breastfeeding

http://www.aap.org/advocacy/bf/brsection.htm

In 1994, the Academy established the first Work Group on Breastfeeding. Since that time, the Work Group was renamed the Task Force on Breastfeeding in 1999. It was reestablished in July 2000 as a Provisional Section on Breastfeeding, and became a permanent Section on Breastfeeding with more than 800 members in July 2002. The Section on Breastfeeding offers networking and educational opportunities for AAP members interested in breastfeeding promotion and management. Since 1994, the pediatricians dedicated to breastfeeding promotion have

  • Published the 1997 major policy statement, Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk, which is undergoing revision for publication in 2003
  • Published the AAP policy statement, WIC Program, in 2001
  • With the AAP Committee on Nutrition published the clinical report, Prevention of Rickets and Vitamin D Deficiency: New Guidelines for Vitamin D Intake, in 2003
  • Coordinated two national Continuing Medical Education training conferences for the AAP Chapter Breastfeeding Coordinators and other health professionals
  • Developed and implemented an Ambulatory Care Quality Improvement Program (ACQIP) exercise on breastfeeding
  • Coordinated a series of well-attended seminars and lectures on breastfeeding for the annual AAP National Conference and Exhibition
  • Reviewed and assisted in the revision of publications and policy statements that concern breastfeeding

The Section is responsible for sponsoring educational sessions and activities at AAP national, state, and other conferences. Some of the programs under its jurisdiction include the following

The Breastfeeding Promotion in Pediatric Office Practices Program

http://www.aap.org/advocacy/bf/bppop-phaseII.htm*

The Breastfeeding Promotion in Physicians’ Office Practices (BPPOP II) program provides maternal and pediatric health professionals with the latest scientific information, culturally sensitive promotional materials, and strategies for increasing breastfeeding rates in racially and ethnically diverse populations. A project advisory committee made up of representatives of 11 health professional organizations and public health agencies provides perspective and assistance with program activities. The program is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, Maternal and Child Health Bureau and the AAP Friends of Children Corporate Fund.

BPPOP II builds on the successful 1997–2001 AAP Breastfeeding Promotion in Pediatric Office Practices (BPPOP)* program.

Survey of Pediatrician’s Practices and Attitudes Regarding BF Promotion

http://www.aap.org/research/ps30exm.htm*

In 1995, the AAP Division of Chapter Services and the Work Group on Breastfeeding conducted a Periodic Survey of Fellows to explore pediatricians’ counseling practices regarding breastfeeding promotion, attitudes surrounding breastfeeding education and management, as well as awareness of their hospitals’ breastfeeding promotion activities. The survey is being readministered in 2003 to capture a current snapshot of breastfeeding attitudes and practices among AAP members.
