The International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) was formed in
1985 as the professional organization for more than 4000 certified
lactation consultants in 31 countries worldwide. ILCA provides
professional education for its member consultants, promotes research on
all aspects of lactation and human milk, increases public awareness of the
importance of breastfeeding, and cooperates with national and
international organizations in promoting, protecting, and supporting
breastfeeding.
The organization provides exemplary professional training opportunities
to its members at its annual conference, and through individual study
modules, position statements, books, and other publications; such as,
- the Journal of Human Lactation, a quarterly, peer-reviewed
forum for scientific research specific to breastfeeding and human
milk, and
- the ILCA Globe, a quarterly newsletter that provides
information about educational offerings, initiatives to assist
lactation consultants in their business and practice settings, and
legislation affecting the field.

Certified Lactation Consultants have successfully passed the rigorous
credentialing examination administered by the International Board of
Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE). For a national registry of
