The San Diego County Breastfeeding Coalition (SDCBC) is a non-profit association of health professionals whose mission is to promote and support breastfeeding through education and outreach in the community. The objectives of the San Diego Breastfeeding Coalition are:

  • To increase the number of physicians and other primary health care providers in San Diego County who include breastfeeding/ lactation counseling as part of routine care.
  • To increase the number of infants who are breastfed in the early postpartum period.
  • To increase the number of infants who continue breastfeeding to twelve months of age or older.
  • To provide accurate and consistent breastfeeding information to families, health professionals and the community.
  • To encourage breastfeeding friendly policies and procedures in all area hospitals and birthing centers.
  • To conduct research regarding the incidence, prevalence and means of supporting breastfeeding in our community.

Since the inception of the Coalition in May 1994, members have accomplished a great deal.  For example, they:

  • have distributed over 100,000 copies of free Breastfeeding Resource Guides in English and Spanish to help families obtain needed breastfeeding resources and support,
  • have sponsored health care professional breastfeeding education programs,
  • have conducted a county-wide billboard campaign with the slogan Good Health Begins with Breastfeeding in English and Spanish,
  • have developed a Breastfeeding Resource Handbook for Health Care Professionals, which gives basic breastfeeding information, relevant articles, references, and further resources,
  • successfully partnered with the March of Dimes and Children's Hospital in developing brochures for employers and employees on working and breastfeeding,
  • annually present  an award to honor San Diego County businesses with breastfeeding-friendly policies and programs for their employees, and established a window-sticker program ("Breastfeeding Welcome Here") to encourage patronage of breastfeeding-friendly establishments,
  • have donated over 200 breastfeeding books, in English and Spanish, to San Diego County libraries,
  • coalition maintains informational displays at many community events (eg. Parent-Child Expo) and educational conferences,
  • celebrate World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7 each year) with various interviews, media events, and educational and public relations efforts, and
  • continue to work actively with private insurers and managed care health plans to simplify both patient and professional access to breastfeeding support services, including lactation consultation, breast pumps and supplies, and donor human milk when medically necessary.

  • Additional regional breastfeeding coalitions throughout California

In 1997 the California Department of Health Services published "Breastfeeding: Investing in California's Future" to support and guide breastfeeding efforts in the state.  In response to the state's call to action, numerous regional and community-level coalitions formed to promote and support breastfeeding.  For a comprehensive view of coalition activity throughout the state of California, visit: http://www.breastfeeding.org/bfcoalitions.htm
