Founded in 1983, the
National Association of WIC Directors (NAWD) is a voluntary, nonprofit
membership organization that supports, inspires and empowers the WIC
community through creativity, teamwork, and leadership. WIC
(the Special Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) is the
nation's largest nutrition program, currently serving over 7 million
at-risk women, infants and children. Participants on WIC receive nutrition
education, breastfeeding promotion and support, access to health care, and
supplemental foods. In 1999, 56% of WIC mothers initiated breastfeeding in
comparison to 33.7% in 1990.
NAWD is committed to
promoting and supporting breastfeeding in the WIC program. During the past
decade, NAWD has been instrumental in:
- sponsoring a
national nutrition education and breastfeeding promotion conference
every two years
- establishing a
breastfeeding promotion committee within the organization
- developing position
papers on breastfeeding topics, such as
- Breastfeeding
Promotion in the WIC Program
- Guidelines for
Breastfeeding Promotion and Support in the WIC Program
- Guidelines for
WIC Agencies Providing Breast Pumps
- Guidelines for
Issues Related to HIV/AIDS and the WIC Program
- promoting the USDA
Food and Nutrition Service's WIC National Breastfeeding Promotion
Campaign, Loving Support
- collaborating with
the American Academy of Pediatrics in training physicians in
breastfeeding promoting and management of breastfeeding patients
- working successfully
with Congress to expand the use of WIC food funds for the purchase of
breast pumps.
NAWD participates
actively in the USDA Food and Nutrition
Services Breastfeeding Promotion Consortium and the United
States Breastfeeding Committee.
