Formed in 1996, the
Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS, pronounced "kims")
unites approximately 25 prominent childbirth education organizations and
member midwives, physicians, nurses, childbirth educators, labor support
providers, lactation consultants, postpartum care providers, and consumer
advocates. Together they created the Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative
which advocates for a woman's rights during labor and delivery and
encourages all mothers and families, including those with sick or
premature newborns or infants with congenital problems, to touch, hold,
breastfeed, and care for their babies to the extent compatible with their
conditions.
The Mother-Friendly
Childbirth Initiative is an evidence-based document which provides
guidelines for identifying and designating mother-friendly birth sites
including hospitals, birth centers, and home-birth services. The
Initiative outlines ten steps for mother-friendly care and includes as a
requirement that mother-friendly birthing services also qualify as
"baby-friendly" according to the World Health Organization's
guidelines. The CIMS 10 Steps of the Mother-Friendly Childbirth
Initiative are outlined in http://www.motherfriendly.org/MFCI/steps.html
